Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

MSL973020 - Perform histological procedures

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Process tissue

  1. Perform pre-use checks to ensure processor is fit for purpose
  2. Select program and reagents for processing
  3. Inspect processor reagents for deterioration and adequate volume, and report any items requiring replacement
  4. Check processor for errors that occurred during processing sequence

Embed tissue

  1. Check that volume of wax is sufficient for uninterrupted embedding of processor load
  2. Check that temperature of wax is suitable for embedding process
  3. Embed tissue in correct orientation
  4. Apply procedures to prevent cross-contamination between tissues
  5. Inspect blocks, reject and re-embed items that do not meet quality control standards
